June 26, 2011 - New campaign will use "manspeak" to help men deal with suicidal thoughts

by Electa Draper Denver Post

If you think it's hard for a guy to ask for directions, then consider how much harder it is to ask for help with suicidal thoughts. The group most likely to take their own lives is the same demographic least likely to seek out a mental-health professional. "This is double jeopardy for working-age men," said psychologist Sally Spencer-Thomas, executive director of The Carson J. Spencer Foundation. Working-age men, 21-65, die by suicide at twice the baseline rate of other Americans, according to studies. The Spencer Foundation and partners are preparing a fall education campaign that they believe will be edgy, intriguing and even darkly humorous enough to get men's attention. It might even erase the stigma men attach to mental-health care.

"He went into a hole too deep to climb out of," Spencer said. "I was watching this train moving so fast, and I couldn't stop it. We let him out of our sight for two hours. His dad found him. "We have turned our grief into the Carson J. Spencer Foundation."
